Biography[]
Maruyama was born in Tokyo City, Tokyo Prefecture (now Tokyo). According to Maruyama, he had been called "a breastfed baby" from a young age, and he claimed to have a delicate constitution.
During the wartime, he was involved in making machine gun bullets, but he didn't experience any war-related disasters.
He attended an old-style middle school, and after the war ended, he continued his education in a new-style high school. During his high school years, he felt lost and didn't know what to pursue. However, after watching a play at school, he decided to study acting. He went on to study at the Faculty of Literature at Hosei University. He was taken to Kabuki-za by a university professor and developed an interest in kabuki. He even had the chance to see Nakamura Kichiemon's dressing room. While he was in the hospital due to illness, someone told him that the entertainment world was a place where skills mattered, which made him think it was like "shingeki" (new drama or modern theater). He then dropped out of the university and entered the world of "shingeki."
