Gatchaman (GATCHAMAN(ガッチャマン)) is a Japanese movie released on August 24th, 2013. This is a live-action version of the classic 1972 anime Science Ninja Team Gatchaman created by Tatsunoko Production, and is the fourth live-action movie following the production's previous movies: Casshern, Mach GoGoGo, and Yatterman. It was named as the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Nippon Television Network, the 100th anniversary of Nikkatsu, and the 50th anniversary of Tatsunoko Production.

The catch phrase is "Is that power is justice, or destruction?" (その力は、正義か、破壊か―, Sono chikara wa, seigi ka, hakai ka―). It was released at the same time as Good Morning Ninja Team Gatchaman The Movie.

Production[]

Nikkatsu announced the production decision with Yatterman on April 10th, 2007. Five years later, on October 12th, 2012, a concrete production announcement was made again, with the production committee method production, main cast, main staff, plot outline, and release date were announced. The shoot was cranked in on October 15th, 2012 and cranked up on December 27th, 2012. The location sets were built in Tsukuba and Takahagi. On April 11th, 2013, the visuals of the five main characters' costumes (G-Suits) were released. Nikkan Sports reported this work as a "Dark Hero".

Plot[]

At the beginning of the 21st century, the mysterious creatures called Galactor suddenly appeared and declared war on the whole world, has occupied half of the Earth in just 17 days and threatens to exterminate the human race. All of mankind's weaponry does not work against the red Shield (シールド, Shīrudo) that protects the Galactor. Around the same time, the International Science Organization had uncovered mysterious crystal Stone in 17th century that bear unusual powers, which can break the Galactor's Shield. It is said that one person out of approximately eight million people is able to harness the power of the stones; they are known as a Receptor (適合者, Tekigō-sha). Discovered that it could be countered, Dr. Nanbu started the establishment and training of an anti-Galactor unit ISO Agent (ISOエージェント, Aiesuō Ējento), composed of conforming Receptors.

Thirteen years later, Japanese ISO Agents: Ken, Jun, Jinpei, and Ryu encounter their first actual battle with Galactor, as Gatchaman.

  • The Gatchaman costumes were one of the biggest production costs for the film, with the director wanting a "Hollywood level" quality to them. They took one year to design and construct and cost $40,000 US each for the five suits, resulting in a grand total of $200,000 (¥200,000,000 JPN) in production costs.
  • A nod to Jun being an orphan in the original series is made when Ken Washio mentions her parents being deceased. In this film, however, she makes a claim that they are actually being held captive; aside from a later flashback, that is the only time they were mentioned.
