Saber + Zenkaiger: Superhero Senki (セイバー聖刃+ゼンカイジャー:スーパーヒーロー戦記, Seibā + Zenkaijā: Supāhīrō Senki, lit. Superhero War Chronicle) is a Japanese superhero crossover film between Kamen Rider SaberIcon-crosswiki and Kikai Sentai ZenkaigerIcon-crosswiki, serving to comememorate both the Kamen Rider 50th AnniversaryIcon-crosswiki and Super Sentai 45th AnniversaryIcon-crosswiki.

The film was also accompanied by an "special"Icon-crosswiki short film of Kamen Rider ReviceIcon-crosswiki, which featured early-bird appearances of both protagonists Kamen Riders ReviIcon-crosswiki and ViceIcon-crosswiki, ahead of their in-series debuts.

The catchphrase for this film is "Straightforward heroes, half a century!" (ヒーロー一筋、半世紀!, Hīrō hitosuji, han-seiki!)

Synopsis

"I will decide; at full speed, non stop; this story's ending! (物語の結末は、全力全開で、俺が決める!, Monogatari no ketsumatsu wa, zenryoku zenkai de, ore ga kimeru!)"
―Kamen Rider Saber and Zenkaizer's combined catchphrase

Touma, Yuri and Mei somehow ended up in the World of Zenkaiger while four Zenkaigers, except Juran, ended up in the World of Saber. The reason for their swap is due to a man who wishes to rid the world of heroes. How does a male, teenage artist tie into this? And why are they send into different stories with previous Kamen Riders and Super Sentai Teams?

Continuity and Placement

Plot

At the Sword of Logos' Agastya Base space station, the guardian Asmodeus rebels and takes control of all the books containing the Kamen Riders and Super Sentai's stories, merging them into one story. Meanwhile, Touma Kamiyama, Mei Sudo, and Yuri are transported to the world of Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger while Zenkaiger members Kaito Goshikida, Gaon, Magine, and Vroon are transported to the world of Kamen Rider Saber. Touma's group encounter Juran while he is searching for his teammates, help him repel one of Tozitendo's attacks, and meet a young boy named Shotaro. Regrouping at the Zenkaigers' headquarters, they make contact with Kaito's group through Secchan and learn what happened from Sophia.

Suddenly, Asmodeus uses his powers to send Kaito and Rintaro Shindo to a world based on Journey to the West, while Touma, Juran, Mei, and Shotaro are sent to one based on Nansō Satomi Hakkenden. With help from several Riders and Sentai warriors they meet along the way, both groups get to the end of their respective stories and reunite to confront Asmodeus. However, he convinces Shotaro that both the Riders and Sentai groups should not exist as they always suffer over the course of their stories. Shotaro destroys his drawings, causing the Riders and Sentai to disappear. While vanishing, Touma discovers he and his friends were part of a story as well instead of the real world. He then wakes up in a world where they live peaceful lives and the battles they faced never happened, leading him to realize that facing hardships are what makes heroes human and that Shotaro is actually a young, time-displaced Shotaro Ishinomori, the creator of the Riders and Sentai's stories. Touma finds and convinces him to create heroes again, and together they create a new story called Super Hero Senki.

Concurrently, Asmodeus joins forces with the Riders and Sentai groups' enemies to take over the story worlds, only to be opposed by the Sword of Logos, Zenkaigers, Twokaizer, and their Rider and (Red) Sentai predecessors, who destroy the villains while Asmodeus is defeated by Kamen Riders Revi and Vice. Asmodeus absorbs his fallen allies' machinery to enlarge himself and transform into a dragon, but the Sentai warriors summon their mecha to join the Riders in destroying him. As the heroes return to their respective worlds, Kamen Rider 1 recognizes Shotaro as his creator. Shotaro realizes he is at a point in time where he is already dead, but rejoices knowing that his creations will continue inspiring others long after his death and promises to fulfill his dream of making hero stories before returning to his time. The Agastya Base's books are restored, including a new book for Kamen Rider Revice. Touma, Mei and the Zenkaigers stop by the Candy Cafe Colorful to celebrate their victory and discuss Revi and Vice's story.

Errors

  • The sound effect when Kamen Rider GrandZi-O summons Kabuto is cut off suddenly at the end when Kabuto is materialized.
  • For some reason , Kabuto is wearing Hyper Zecter when he is summoned.
  • A cameraman shows up for seconds when the scene cut to the overview of Buster, Black, GekiRed, Red Mask, and RyuRanger battle.
  • The sound effects for the Geartlinger's finisher are incorrectly timed when Zenkaiser readies his finisher against Asmodeus.
  • The Riders and Sentai change positions entirely towards the end of their respective roll calls.

Real-world References

About Shotaro Ishinomori

  • This is not the first time Shotaro interacts with his creations, the first attempt was in the 2011 novel Playback.
  • Shotaro's older sister Yoshie OnoderaIcon-crosswiki had an important role in his early life, this was adapted into his relationship with Mei SudoIcon-crosswiki in this film.
  • A biography book of Ishinomori appears in this movie.
  • Ishinomori was in favor of giving a "bad ending" or a tragic fate to his superhero genre character, this was adapted into part of Asmodeus' plan.

Journey to the West

  • The real-world Journey to the West is a 16th century Chinese fictional novel. The book itself has influenced the Sanzo EyeconIcon-crosswiki and Saiyuu JourneyIcon-crosswiki in Kamen Rider franchise.
  • Kintaros as Zhu Bajie: Both Zhu Bajie in the original text and Kintaros are lazy.
  • Urataros as Sha Wujing: Although in the original text Sha Wujing is a blue-skin demon, Japanese versions usually treated him as a kappa, a creature with tortoise shell.
  • Ryutaros as Tang Sanzang: Tang Sanzang uses mantra to shrink Sun Wukong's ring in order to control him, a retelling of Ryutaros' trouble-maker attitude on Momotaros. Tang Sanzang's horse is also a dragon.
  • The four Imagin arrived at Sentai Megid's "fake destination", referencing how the Tang Sanzang group in Journey to the West had arrived at the "fake India" controlled by the antagonist Yellow Brows.

Hakkenden

  • The real-world Hakkenden is a 19th century Japanese fictional novel. The book itself has influenced the background setting of Kamen Rider SaberIcon-crosswiki.
  • The eight legendary swordsmen all have unique birthmarks in the original text, corresponding to the Super Hero Time block partner's storybook with some of the swordsmen.
    • Ryu Commander carries the Ryuki book is a nod to their dragon motif.
    • Juran carrying J is referring to Kamen Rider J and TyrannoRanger sharing the same actor.

Notes

  • According to producer Shinichiro Shirakura, Superhero Senki would be Toei's final crossover film between both franchises.[9]
  • This is the first Kamen Rider/Super Sentai film to premiere in the summer as a crossover instead of a double-billing, as Saber's filmIcon-crosswiki premiered in December 2020, while Zenkaiger's filmIcon-crosswiki premiered in February 2021.
  • Although Masaki Terasoma and Kenichi Suzumura reprise their Kamen Rider Den-OIcon-crosswiki roles of KintarosIcon-crosswiki and RyutarosIcon-crosswiki respectively, they are not credited for the limited on-screen appearances of their respective Super Sentai roles Kishiryu TyramigoIcon-crosswiki and Mashin FireIcon-crosswiki, both who appear in the film but do not have any lines.
  • This film features the first on-screen crossover between the protagonists of both Kamen Rider Zero-OneIcon-crosswiki and Kamen Rider SaberIcon-crosswiki with Fumiya TakahashiIcon-crosswiki and Syuichiro NaitoIcon-crosswiki reprising their respective roles. The two were previously unable to appear in their own Movie War film in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the production of their own individual films and being released as a double-billingIcon-crosswiki.
  • This film features the reappearance of Kamen Rider 1’s original costume from the first 13 episodes of the 1971 show, which outside of manga, video games, and toys, has not been seen in the TV show or on film in 50 years.
  • This film marks the first on-screen appearance of LunaIcon-crosswiki from Kamen Rider SaberIcon-crosswiki in her adult form, portrayed by Mayuu YokotaIcon-crosswiki. She would later Televised debut as adult Luna in the TV series beginning from episode 44Icon-crosswiki.
  • A mannequin of Kamen Rider Shin was used during the gathering of the Riders and Rangers, with wooden pedestals able to be seen under his feet in certain shots. This was due to the suit's deterioration since its last usage, and current condition being too poor to be used to perform action sequences. [10] As such, aside from the initial scene where all of the main Riders and Sentai Reds gather, Shin is not featured in any of the subsequent fight scenes in this film.
    • Aside from Shin for the aforementioned reasons, Kamen Rider X is the only other hero who is not featured in the team-up battle montage sequence, only appearing in the battle scenes afterwards.
  • Nearly all of the Primary Kamen Riders and Sentai Red Rangers are voiced by unknown voice actors instead of their regular actors in this film, all of which are uncredited.
