"Strength comes not only from physical prowess, but also from what we are willing to protect."[1]

–Son Nguyen

Son Nguyen, styled in Vietnamese as "Nguyễn Sơn", is the secondary protagonist of Mighty Guardian: Lost Avian. He is an immortal man who has lived thousands of years to protect humanity from supernatural threats.

Biography[]

The Immortal Man[]

Son is the son of Sơn Tinh (Tản Viên Sơn Thánh) and the grandson of Hung King XVIII. Thousands of years ago, his father and grandfather fought alongside the leader of the Au Viet tribe in a brutal war against monsters from the North and local demons. The battle raged for days and nights, during which they slew countless foes. Unfortunately, the monsters from the North and their horde proved too powerful, wiping out most of their forces. Both the Hung King and Sơn Tinh were ultimately forced to sacrifice themselves to seal the creatures away, with Sơn Tinh forging a sealing stone using his own body.

Son was raised by his mother (possibly she was Mị Nương Ngọc Hoa and she was daughter of the Hung King XVIII and the wife of Sơn Tinh), who recounted tales of this ancient war, inspiring him to continue his father's legacy: protecting people from monsters and demons without disrupting their lives. His valiant actions did not go unnoticed, as the legend of the "Immortal Man" wielding an axe has been passed down through rumors.

In the modern day, after the seal was inadvertently broken by Trung Quan Nguyen, monsters suddenly emerged, posing a threat to the people. Sensing this, Son wasted no time in seeking out and destroying them. During one of his attempts to locate the Wicked Rooster (Quỷ Kê Tinh), he discovered he was too late, as the monster had already been defeated by the Golden Warrior.

When the high-ranked monster, Wicked Centipede (Rết Tinh), embarked on a killing spree, Son appeared before it could claim more innocent lives and engaged it in battle. The fight proved challenging, forcing Son to rely on his earth power to make the creature flee.

The Reunion[]

Sometime later, he was contacted by Hung King XVIII/Hùng Duệ Vương, leading to his reunion with his grandfather after millennia. They discussed the ancient war and the current circumstances, especially how the Hung King was forced to use Quan's body to fight. Son convinced his grandfather to try persuading Quan to accept the responsibility of fighting, given the King's limited time. When he met with Quan, Son attempted to explain the situation, but Quan was irritated at having to deal with this mess. To this, Son sternly warned that horrible things were impending and that if Quan didn't take it seriously, he could lose everything dear to him.

The New Guardians[]

Son would meet Quan again sometime later, and they had a conversation about how the monsters are getting more restless each day. Son explained that while lower-ranked monsters like Ghouls were manageable, high-ranked ones were on a completely different level, impervious to human weaponry. He emphasized that only the Mighty Guardian's purification power could truly destroy them for good. Quan then confessed that he and Hùng Duệ Vương had recently had a conflict, after which the Hung King had ceased appearing. Coupled with his guilt over being unable to stop the monsters' killing spree and save innocent lives, he felt conflicted, wondering if everything was his fault. Yet, he still feared being possessed and losing control of his life again. Son then reassured Quan that fear could be a motivator, driving him to stand up and protect what he might lose, and that in doing so, he would find his own strength.

When the Wicked Centipede and Wicked Corvus (Ô Nha Tinh) announced they had captured hostages and threatened to kill them if the Mighty Guardian did not intervene, Son rushed to the scene to confront both monsters. He summoned his axe and fought evenly against them simultaneously, even managing to kill the Wicked Corvus. During the battle, Quan appeared, saving an officer who was about to be attacked by the Wicked Centipede, taking a poisonous bite in the officer's stead. After the fight, Son visited Quan in the hospital, where he met Hùng Duệ Vương once more. They discussed Quan and how much had changed since the King was sealed away. Son sympathized with Quan and believed he had overcome his fear of responsibility by risking his life and asked Hùng Duệ Vương to give Quan a choice in his own fate. Suddenly, Son heard that monsters were attacking again, prompting him to leave, but before he departed, the King gave his offerings to Son, stating that everything now depended on him.

In the ensuing battle against the Wicked Centipede and Wicked Cobra (Xà Tinh), Son was tag-teamed by both monsters, who prevented him from using his axe and nearly finished him off. Quan arrived just in time, now having decided to fight on his own accord. Son assisted Quan in battle with his new transformation, and he managed to gravely wound the Wicked Cobra, forcing it to flee. After the battle, Son and Quan met again on more positive terms, with Son affirming his full support for Quan from that point forward and giving him the King's offerings. Son then explained that many monsters were sealed away during the ancient war but had yet to reappear, concluding that this was only the beginning. Quan then mentioned seeing another drumhead similar to the offerings on the seal.

Appearances in other media[]

No God’s Land[]

In the movie trailer, Son Nguyen was depicted trapped within a containment-like box, where he argued with a man named Gondu. Gondu, it was revealed, sought to steal their divine power to save his planet, X52. A fight then ensued between Mighty Guardian Lost Avian XIX and Gondu, which caused the box to crack, allowing Son to break free and join Quan in fighting against Gondu. However, the scene abruptly cut short, revealing it was merely a dream of Quan's.

Personality[]

In his first appearance, Son was immediately depicted as a brave and responsible individual, actively seeking out and battling ancient monsters that had emerged in modern times. It was later revealed that he is, in fact, the "Immortal Man" from legend, who has lived for thousands of years, diligently protecting humanity from supernatural threats without disturbing the everyday lives of the people. Son showed particular irritation when Quan ranted about his reluctance to get involved in the fighting, viewing it as not his responsibility.

Despite this, Son also shows a compassionate and understanding side. He sympathized with Quan during one of their early conversations and later visited Quan at the hospital after he was poisoned by the Wicked Centipede. While conversing with Hùng Duệ Vương at the hospital, Son understood Quan's difficult position and earnestly tried to convince his grandfather to put his trust in Quan. When Quan finally accepted the mantle of the next Mighty Guardian Lost Avian, Sơn pledged his full support from that point onward, clearly indicating that he recognized Quan as a worthy successor to Hùng Duệ Vương.

Abilities[]

  • Combat Skills: Son employs a distinct fighting style known as "Stone Knuckles," which he typically combines with rock gauntlets. He has also demonstrated remarkable proficiency with his battle axe, managing to keep pace with both the Wicked Corvus and Wicked Centipede simultaneously.
  • Immortality: Son's immortality allows him to live for thousands of years without aging. However, his body is not invincible; he can still be harmed.
  • Geokinesis/Earth Manipulation: Son possesses an innate ability to control and manipulate earth, utilizing it in various ways: he can hurl rocks at opponents, mold burning rocks into gauntlets to amplify his strength, and summon his stone axe directly from the ground.
  • Superhuman Durability: Son can withstand attacks from high-ranked monsters, such as the Wicked Centipede or Wicked Cobra, even without activating his earth power. When amplified with his rock gauntlets, Son can effortlessly tank and block their attacks without issue.
  • Superhuman Endurance: Son was able to endure a potentially fatal strike to his knee from the Wicked Cobra and continue fighting as if completely unharmed.
  • Superhuman Strength: Even without his earth power, Son easily defeated a Ghoul, a monster capable of one-hitting a human and possessing such a hard body that it required two full gun magazines to be killed. When utilizing his rock gauntlets, Son's strikes are powerful enough to crush rock and break the Wicked Centipede's forcipules.
  • Weapon Summoning: By concentrating Divine Energy into his hands, Son can summon his battle axe, pulling it up from the ground. A minor weakness of this ability is that Son requires concentration to summon it, which he cannot do if an enemy actively interferes with him.

Arsenal[]

  • Bike: Son has been seen riding a bike to reach the locations where monsters are present.
  • Stone Axe: A battle axe typically carried hidden within a guitar bag. Its rocky appearance is due to its power being sealed away, rendering it unable to truly kill high-ranked monsters in the same way as the Divine Relics.
  • Tiger Mask: A mask utilized by Son to conceal his identity.

Relationships[]

Allies[]

  • Trung Quan Nguyen: Son and Quan initially met after Son had already conversed with Hùng Duệ Vương, who entrusted him with convincing Quan to accept his new responsibility. Quan, at first, believed he was unrelated to the conflict and tried to get Son to take back the power. However, Son revealed that the power had chosen Quan, not the other way around. This made Quan feel lied to until Son firmly shut him down, urging him to take the situation seriously. In their second conversation, Son adopted a softer approach with Quan, seeing the young man's internal conflict—torn between living a normal life and fearing of losing control of his life again. Later, Son even defended Quan when speaking with Hùng Duệ Vương at the hospital, having witnessed Quan risk his own life to save someone. He managed to convince his grandfather to believe in Quan. Once Quan ultimately chose to fight the monsters and vowed never to let anyone die again, Son pledged his full support to Quan, starting their companionship on a much more positive footing.
  • Hung King XVIII/Hùng Duệ Vương: Son and Hùng Duệ Vương share a very strong grandfather-grandson bond. They were reunited after thousands of years apart. Both seem to have a deep understanding of each other, with the Hung King placing his trust in Son, whether it was to convince Quan to accept his responsibility or to believe in Quan from his grandson's conviction. Hùng Duệ Vương would then rely on Son to deliver his offerings, entrusting his grandson with everything thereafter.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Son Nguyen is portrayed by Quan Lee (Quân Lee/Lê Minh Quân), but the stun actor who plays him in action scenes is unknown.

Notes[]

  • Quan Lee first appeared in one of two old, now-privated 2019 trailers for Mighty Guardian: Lost Avian. Notably, he is one of the few actors who have remained in their roles since then, whereas most of the original cast members have either left or been replaced.
