Plot[]

1993, the year of the rooster. First day of the new year at the Yamabuki family residence. But, it cannot be said that they are celebrating the new year with excitement and happiness. The couple, Mr. and Mrs. Yamabuki, are on the verge of divorce. The three sisters of the Yamabuki family, Yukiko (age 16), Tsukiko (age 13) and Hanako (age 11), go to a karaoke box as a distraction and encounter one of the twelve zodiac signs that rule the year of the rooster, Otori-Sama (お酉様, the rooster). The twelve zodiac signs are responsible for protecting peace and happiness each year, and this year, the year of the rooster, is Otori-sama's turn. The year 1993 is indeed the year of the rooster, but over the past few days all Otori-sama has done is gamble, and as a result he has become addicted to karaoke and can do nothing else. Consequently, unable to fulfill his duty, he asks for help to maintain the peace and happiness of the year on his behalf. The three sisters refuse to accept this ridiculous and selfish request, but Otori-sama makes them an offer they cannot refuse: "If you accept my request, I will mediate to ensure that your parents live together in perfect harmony."

Overview[]

This is the 14th series (13th year) of the Toei Fushigi Comedy series and the final series of the franchise. It was also the last series of Tokusatsu in which Shotaro Ishinomori was involved before his death, and the last series in which Ohno Kenyuukai, participated.

The script was written by the same team that wrote the script for Utau! Dai Ryugujo, in addition to Yoshio Urasawa, Kiyohide Ohara returns for this series after a long absence, and Junki Takegami also joins the screenwriting team.

Dai Ryugujo (Sing! Great Ryugujo) recorded an average rating of 10.4%, up slightly from the previous series' 10.1%. While it did not peak the series, it was not at a low level, but toy sales did suffer a drop due to competition from the popular anime Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (also from Toei), which was airing at the time. Leading to the decision to end the series. The series was originally scheduled to end after 39 episodes, but after the final episode was filmed, three additional episodes were produced to adjust the broadcast period of the show. A big launch party was held with all the staff and cast involved not only in Shushutorian, but also in the previous past series. The series was a great success.

Crossover with Ultraman[]

In episode 40 "Ultraman ni Aitai" (I want to meet Ultraman), one of the additional episodes of the production, Tsuburaya Productions' character Ultraman appears. Kazuo Tsuburaya, then Tsuburaya Productions' sales manager, who was a fan of this series, wanted Shushutorian and Ultraman to co-star in an episode. Toei didn't find it a good idea at first, as the story was already in its final stages, Tsuburaya Productions decided to offer "maximum cooperation" by offering the old Tsuburaya Productions headquarters as the location of the recordings and Tsuburaya Productions employees also appear as some of the civilians who are attacked by monsters. As a result of this, Toei finally accepted.
